Autumn Greetings

In September, summer evenings are invaded by a scent of leaves which are dry and smoke that is winnowing from chimneys.  The late sun, which sets earlier now, is replaced by premature dusk.  The red mercury line that the summer temperatures made long is shortening while our sleeves and pants are lengthening.  Towards the end of summer, some children are getting bored;  some parents are tiring out from their children's youthful energy.  Parents struggle to wake up before the time when the sun rises, and children are excited to return to the place where they spent June dreaming of their summer escape.

The beginning of the school year was especially tough for Lilly, who was just about to begin attending middle school.  The weekend before the first day was the longest ever in her mind.  Even though she had a lot of activities, which her family planned for her, she couldn’t concentrate on any of them.  On Saturday, Lilly’s parents took her to the water park she wanted to visit all summer, but Lilly didn’t have much fun.  She only focused on the knot that was growing in her stomach.  On Sunday, Lilly’s best friend invited her to go to a movie that starred her favorite actress, but she didn’t want to go.  She just wanted to prepare for Monday, which was the first day of middle school.

As she stared into her closet where all of her new school clothes hung, she kept wondering if her new school would have the same features that her old school had.  Would there be a playground that she could run around in?  Would she like the teachers that she was assigned?  Would she be able to find all of her classroom with the cartoon-looking map they gave her?  What would she do if her locker were next to someone she didn’t know?  Snapping herself out of her daydream, she made the decision to wear the blue jeans that her friend suggested.

It was cold and rainy that Monday, so Lilly decided to stay in bed where she could sleep all day.  Her mom didn’t like the idea that she didn’t want to go to school, so she made Lilly get out of bed.  Breakfast was already made, and her mom tried to make her feel better with the calming words that everything was going to be fine.  In the car on the way to school, Lilly’s stomach was so tight with nerves that she almost couldn’t walk, but she did anyway.  The moment that she walked through the front door, she saw her best friend, and she felt good again.
